SC5: Introduction to Geosteering

Speakers:

Carlos Yanez ROGII

Travis Hagler  ROGII

This Introduction to Geosteering course is intended to introduce participants to ROGII's StarSteer geoscience software. Students will finish the class with the ability to set up a new project from scratch, develop geosteering interpretations based on the loaded data, and accurately report results. We will also cover the basics of using geosteering interpretations to update existing grids within the StarSteer mapping module.

Who Should Participate and Prerequisites:

  • Anyone looking to learn StarSteer for the first time.
  • A basic knowledge of geoscience data types and drilling operations is strongly recommended.
  • While computers will be available to use, you are welcome to bring your own.  You must have a reasonably modern PC (with stable internet access) capable of installing and running StarSteer. Macs are not supported. Having a mouse (as opposed to a laptop touchpad) is highly recommended.

We will be covering:

  • Basic geosteering/StarSteer concepts:
  • Geosteering vocabulary.
    • Stat vs. model-based geosteering.
    • What is a typewell, and why do we need it?
    • Minimum data required to steer a well in StarSteer.
  • StarSteer introduction, data loading, and software navigation.
  • Typewell Referencing.
  • Horizon set up and fills.
  • Geosteering in StarSteer.
  • Geosteering with grids.
  • Using geosteering interpretations to update existing grids.
