FT1: Exploring the Geology of Nacogdoches

A half-day field trip exploring the surface geology, structural features, and rich history of Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. This trip will highlight how geologic processes have shaped the landscape and influenced human settlement in East Texas. Along the way, we’ll explore how geology intersects with history, from the early Caddo Indian Mounds, which reflect centuries of human interaction with the land, to the Stone Fort, an important historical landmark built using locally sourced materials, and discuss early exploration in the region. Stops include:
· Eocene Sparta Sand
· Eocene Weches Formation
· Caddo Indian Mounds
· City Cemetery
· Mt. Enterprise Fault System
This trip is perfect for anyone interested in the geologic and cultural history of East Texas and how the landscape has influenced the people and industries that have called this region home.

Fee: $10 students; $20 professional
